Water Fun

When it comes to water, on Cape Cod we have it all! Go in any direction and you’ll find ocean surf, calm bays, pristine ponds and lakes and other bodies of water, just waiting to be explored. Take your pick of sailing, fishing, kayaking, kite-sailing, swimming or just lounging on the beach and soaking up the atmosphere. Better yet, do it all!

Kayaking

Kayaking, a great way to enjoy the waters of Cape Cod, is an activity enjoyed by families, couples or all by yourself. Experience nature and wildlife on Cape Cod while paddling through marshes, along the shoreline of the bay or in one of numerous yet hidden kettle ponds. There are opportunities to rent kayaks for a day of fun and also many eco-tour companies and kayak guides who are happy to offer a lesson and guided tour through the spectacular waters of Cape Cod.

Fishing

Many harbors are home to charter boat companies eager to offer you the thrill of hauling in a big one. Summer’s the time to find striped bass and bluefish in Cape Cod waters and both are known for their fight, so expect excitement and a workout as you reel them in. Anglers working the bottom will encounter flounder, porgy and tautag. Freshwater fishermen and women will delight in the bounty of local ponds—largemouth bass, pickerel, yellow perch, bullheads, white perch, trout and more. Freshwater fishing licenses, available at most town halls, are required for those 15 years of age and older.

Sailing

Sailing has a long and storied history on Cape Cod. It is simply a fabulous way to spend time on the water, no experience necessary. Many charter companies offer half-day, full-day and sunset sails while captains are often willing to let guests help sail. Or, just sit back and relax as the gentle breezes lull you into a state of serenity. A selection of marinas rent sailboats and places to dock your boat if you’ve brought your own.

Whale Watching

Take a professional whale watching cruise for awe-inspiring scenes of these giant mammals breaking through the surf. Head out in a boat toward the nutrient-rich feeding grounds of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and you can’t help but marvel at the whales you’ll see feeding, breaching and playing in their natural habitat. Species of whales that are most common in Stellwagen Bank include humpback, fin, minke, pilot and northern right. Several species of dolphins and porpoises, known collectively with whales as “cetaceans,” also inhabit the area. The move from “hunting” to “watching” whales has dramatically shifted the view of whales and their place in our world. During the 1970s, whale watching grew as an attraction in New England, and by 1985, due to the dense and active humpback whale population, New England surpassed other regions in the country for number of whale watching expeditions. Over the years, as science and research focus more on marine life and its effects in the world, and as people become increasingly environment-conscious, whale watching has brought attention to the importance of protecting whales and other marine life. These popular excursions leave from Provincetown and Barnstable Harbor. Most boats require reservations, so be sure to call ahead.
